Explore the Pan-American Highway: World's Longest Road

1:05 AM |

Pan-American Highway

In its most expansive form, the Pan-American Highway is a labyrinth of roadways extending from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina, spanning an impressive 48,000 kilometers (30,000 miles).

As recognized by Guinness World Records, the Pan-American Highway holds the title of the longest "motorable road" globally. However, it's not feasible to drive the entire distance due to the 160-kilometer (100-mile) interruption known as the Darién Gap located between Central and South America.

The Highway incorporates both formal and informal segments. The official section, often referred to in Spanish as the Autopista, Carretera, or Ruta Panamericana, starts from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, bordering the U.S., and ends in Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital.

Nonetheless, the map reveals sizable informal sections extending beyond the official route to the north and south.

The route shown on the map runs through 14 countries:

  • The United States
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Guatemala
  • El Salvador
  • Honduras
  • Nicaragua
  • Costa Rica
  • Panama
  • Colombia
  • Ecuador
  • Peru
  • Chile
  • Argentina

It also has links to a number of other countries. In the process it passes through all the major climate zones and many varied landscapes including arctic tundra, boreal forest, mountains, prairies, arid deserts and tropical jungles.
