The Sharpless Nebula 2-188

12:17 AM | ,

Its central star is 850 light years away and is moving at about 125 kilometers per second. The image shows a bright arc and filaments in the direction the star is moving, and less bright spiral structures in the back. These are a consequence of the rapid journey that the central star is making through the interstellar medium. These structures favor the mixing of interstellar material and the subsequent formation of stars.
The globular cluster Omega Centauri is the brightest and largest in the Milky Way. It can be seen with the naked eye, although practically only from the latitude of the Canary Islands. This image was obtained using amateur media from the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma. (Javier Méndez Álvarez, Isaac Newton Telescope Group, La Palma).
