Third dangerous assumption: "We understand how these AI systems work well enough to trust them with life-and-death decisions." Absolutely false. Even DARPA, the agency that helped create modern AI, admits they don't understand how these systems actually make decisions.

Now, let me tell you why these aren't just academic concerns—they're the defining challenge of our time.



The Speed Trap We've Built for Ourselves

Here's what's really happening behind the Pentagon's closed doors: America is caught in what I call the "speed trap." Modern warfare moves so fast that human decision-making has become a liability. Hypersonic missiles can strike anywhere on Earth in minutes. Cyberattacks happen in milliseconds. Swarms of autonomous drones coordinate attacks faster than any human commander can process.

The military's solution? Hand over more decisions to AI systems that can think—or at least calculate—at machine speed .

But here's the terrifying part: these AI systems aren't just processing data. They're making strategic recommendations that could determine whether we live or die. Project Maven, the Pentagon's flagship AI programme, now transmits "100 percent machine-generated" intelligence to battlefield commanders with no human oversight . Think about that for a moment—life-and-death targeting decisions made entirely by algorithms.

When AI Plays Nuclear Chess, Everyone Loses

Last year, Jacquelyn Schneider at Stanford ran a series of war games that should have sent shockwaves through every defence ministry in the world. She gave five different AI models—including OpenAI's GPT and Anthropic's Claude—control over fictional crisis scenarios resembling Ukraine or Taiwan results were chilling. Almost every AI model showed a preference for aggressive escalation, indiscriminate use of firepower, and turning crises into shooting wars. Some even recommended launching nuclear weapons .

"The AI is always playing Curtis LeMay," Schneider observed, referring to the notoriously hawkish Cold War general. "It's almost like the AI understands escalation, but not de-escalation" .

Why does this happen? The answer reveals something profound about how these systems learn. AI models are trained on decades of strategic literature, war studies, and military doctrine—most of which focuses on escalation because that's what gets studied and written about. De-escalation is harder to analyse because it means studying wars that didn't happen .

In other words, our AI systems have learned to be warmongers because that's what we've taught them through our own strategic thinking.

The Dead Hand Returns

Remember the Cold War concept of a "dead hand" system—an automated nuclear response that would launch missiles even if a country's leadership was killed? Russia still maintains such a system, called Perimeter . Now, some American defence experts are seriously proposing that the US needs its own AI-powered dead hand.

Adam Lowther from the National Institute for Deterrence Studies argues that America may need "an automated strategic response system based on artificial intelligence" to maintain nuclear deterrence . His reasoning is coldly logical: if China and Russia are using AI in their command systems, America must do the same or risk becoming the weakest nuclear power.

The proposal sounds like science fiction, but it's being discussed in serious strategic circles. The idea would be to pre-programme an AI system with presidential decisions for various scenarios, then let it execute those decisions automatically if communication with leadership is lost .

The Illusion of Human Control

The Pentagon insists that humans will always remain "in the loop" for nuclear decisions. But this reassurance is becoming increasingly meaningless. The military's new Joint All-Domain Command and Control system (JADC2) is designed to integrate conventional and nuclear decision-making into a single AI-powered network .

Even more concerning, the Pentagon's own guidance admits there are exceptions. Defence officials can grant waivers to remove humans from the decision process if they deem it necessary. The humans, in other words, can decide to take themselves out of the loop.

It is a process where the stakes and consequences of action and error are so great that you actually do want that to be a tightly controlled, very manual and human step-by-step process" .

But the pressure is moving in the opposite direction. Speed has become the new currency of military power, and human decision-making is seen as a bottleneck.

The Mathematical Mystery We Can't Solve

Here's perhaps the most unsettling aspect of this entire situation: we don't actually understand how these AI systems work. Patrick Shafto, a mathematician at DARPA who's trying to make AI more reliable, admits that "we really don't understand these systems well at all. It's hard to know when you can trust them and when you can't" .

DARPA has launched a $25 million programme called "AI Quantified" to try to develop mathematical guarantees for AI reliability in military scenarios But even Shafto acknowledges they probably don't have 15 to 20 years to figure this out—they need answers quickly.

We're facing something more subtle and perhaps more dangerous: a world where humans remain technically in charge but practically defer to algorithmic suggestions because they're faster, more confident, and seemingly more comprehensive than human analysis.

As James Johnson, author of "AI and the Bomb," warns: "The real danger is not that AI 'launches the missiles,' but that it subtly alters the logic of deterrence and escalation" . In crisis situations, the distinction between human and machine judgement blurs, especially under intense psychological pressure.

First, we need absolute transparency about how AI is being integrated into nuclear command and control systems. The fact that there's currently no clear Pentagon guidance on this issue is unacceptable .

Second, we need to invest far more resources in understanding how these systems actually work. DARPA's $25 million AI Quantified programme is a start, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to the trillions being spent on AI deployment .

Third, we need to resist the seductive appeal of speed over wisdom. Yes, modern warfare moves fast, but nuclear decisions are irreversible. Some decisions are too important to be made at machine speed.

Finally, we need to remember that the goal of nuclear weapons isn't to fight wars—it's to prevent them. Any AI system involved in nuclear decision-making should be programmed with that fundamental principle.
