I’ve spent years watching this digital revolution gather speed, and today I want to pull you into a question that doesn’t just matter for the next tech headline, but for the very core of what it means to be human: what happens when the digital logic of artificial intelligence collides with the slow, messy, beautiful evolution of human ethics?

Her insight has been a guiding star as we try to map this uncharted territory, and I’m grateful to have her wisdom in this conversation.
Let’s open boldly—with three ideas you’ll hear everywhere, but which demand a sharp critical eye. First: that AI will soon outstrip human morality, making ethical debates quaint relics. Second: that the same Big Tech companies building our new world can responsibly police their own creations. Third: that more advanced AI will naturally create a fairer society for us all. I’m calling out each of these as comforting myths. AI can’t replace the living pulse of human values; tech giants are not neutral guardians; and efficiency isn’t the same as justice. Our job—yours and mine—is to question, not just consume.
The Social Context: Why AI Is Never “Just Technology”
The myth of the “neutral” machine is everywhere. You hear it in boardrooms, in government whitepapers, even in the way people talk about tech at dinner parties. But AI is never just code; it’s always embedded in a social context. That means the impact of artificial intelligence isn’t limited to what it can do, but radiates into what we value, what we approve of, what we reject, and how we see ourselves and each other .
Here’s the truth: every technology is shaped by—and shapes—the society that builds it. The digital revolution didn’t just give us smartphones; it rewrote how we connect, what we believe, even what we hope for. When AI takes on more and more decisions once reserved for human beings—who gets a loan, who gets bail, who sees what information online—it’s not just about efficiency. It’s about the moral scaffolding holding up society. Take away that scaffolding, and the whole thing risks collapse.
The philosopher Giorgio Grossi argues that the “bioethical question” must not be sidelined in the rush to automate. Bioethics isn’t just a philosophical afterthought—it’s the boundary, the cleavage, that technology must never cross without deep reflection. Our ethical frameworks have evolved over centuries, shaping the unique human capacity for self-awareness, empathy, and collective responsibility. AI might imitate intelligence, but it cannot replicate the lived, evolving wisdom of bioethics .
The Pseudo-Ethics Trap: Why Big Tech’s “Ethics” Isn’t Enough
Let’s get really honest. Lately, what passes for “AI ethics” is too often a PR exercise run by the same corporations profiting from the technology. They love to tout “ethical AI” as a guarantee of perfection and neutrality, but as Daniela Tafani points out, this is just a “smokescreen”—a pseudo-ethics as hollow as a metaverse avatar . Behind the curtain, what’s called “ethics” is often little more than a checklist designed to reassure investors, not protect people.
Why does this matter? Because only a true, robust bioethics can grapple with the unpredictable, deeply human consequences of technology. Cibernetica—cybernetics, or the science of control—might help us build better programs, but it can’t answer the question, “What is this doing to our sense of justice, to our communities, to our souls?” The digital world is seductive in its promise of perfection, but perfection is not a moral value. In fact, the relentless pursuit of algorithmic “perfection” can blind us to the lived complexity and imperfection that make us human .
The New Digital Divide: From Bias to Digital Aristocracy
Let’s talk consequences. The more we let AI make decisions, the more we risk sleepwalking into a future where algorithms reinforce, rather than reduce, injustice. Machine learning systems are only as good as the data they’re fed—and that data is riddled with the biases, blind spots, and distortions of the society that produced it. We think we’re building neutral systems, but we’re often automating old prejudices at scale.
Luciano Floridi warns that, without new legal and ethical frameworks, AI threatens to create a new digital aristocracy: a small elite above the machines, and a vast majority below them, subject to decisions they can’t challenge or even understand . This isn’t just theory. We’re already seeing AI systems deliver “unjust, harmful, and absurd” outcomes in courts, banks, schools, and social services. Think about that for a moment. When an algorithm denies you a loan, or a job, or even justice, what recourse do you really have?
This goes deeper than “bad data.” At its heart, this is about the kind of society we want to build. Do we want a world where efficiency trumps meaning, where the happiness produced by algorithms becomes a “virtual drug,” and where inclusion is reduced to conformity? Or do we want a society where technology serves our highest values—fairness, dignity, empathy—even if that means slower, messier, more human systems?
The Limits of Automation: Bioethics as a Survival Kit
Here’s a truth I’ve learned the hard way: the very qualities that make us human—our ability to reflect, to care, to imagine—cannot be reduced to code. AI can simulate intelligence, but it can’t simulate conscience. It can process data, but it can’t feel responsibility or regret. That’s why the question of bioethics is not optional; it’s existential.
Grossi suggests we need to update our ethical “operating system” for the digital age. That means more than just adding a few rules to a software manual. It means refusing to let any algorithm or device bypass the bioethical questions at the heart of human coexistence. It means demanding that our data sets—the fuel for machine learning—are cleansed of prejudice and special interests. And it means insisting that every robot, every system, must be designed to benefit humanity, not just efficiency .
Imagine a new Asimov’s Law for our era: no algorithm or device can sidestep bioethics; all machine learning must be free of hidden bias; every robot must apply bioethical thinking, not just cybernetic logic. This isn’t science fiction—it’s the bare minimum for a future worth inhabiting .
Practical Wisdom: Reclaiming Our Agency
So where do we go from here? It starts with reclaiming our agency—not just as users of technology, but as citizens, as thinkers, as co-authors of the future. That means holding Big Tech accountable, demanding transparency, and pushing for human-centred design at every level. It means updating our laws, yes, but also our habits of mind. We need to ask not just “Does it work?” but “Does it serve us—all of us?” We need to educate ourselves and each other, building a culture that values reflection over reflex, depth over speed.
I’ve seen the best scientists, engineers, and philosophers struggle with the temptation to “move fast and break things.” The bravest among them always return to this: ethics is not a brake on progress, but the compass that keeps progress from running off a cliff. We can’t outsource our moral judgement to algorithms. The responsibility is ours.
