Friday marked a significant milestone for the space exploration community as the Psyche probe embarked on its extraordinary journey. The mighty SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, stationed at Floridas Kennedy Space Center flawlessly launched the probe into space.
Once it broke free from Earths pull the probe engaged its thrusters and set a course for a voyage spanning approximately 3.5 billion kilometers. It is estimated to take under six years to reach its destination, an asteroid known as 16 Psyche.
Located in the Main Belt this asteroid measures around 280 kilometers in diameter. Was first discovered by Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis back in 1852. Current research indicates that Psyche is rich in metals and likely represents the core of a protoplanet that was shattered by a massive collision. Confirming this hypothesis could unlock insights into the early stages of our Solar Systems formation particularly regarding how protoplanets evolved into terrestrial planets, like our own Earth.
The probe itself aptly named Psyche is equipped with scientific instruments including a magnetometer, gamma ray spectrometer and a multi wavelength camera.
The data analysis provided by these tools will give us information about the physical features, geological composition and chemical composition of 16 Psyche. This valuable knowledge could confirm whether the asteroid is truly a core from a protoplanet that lost its layers in the early stages of our Solar Systems formation.
At Free AstroScience we are eagerly looking forward to the discoveries that this mission will bring about regarding our understanding of the universe. Heres hoping for an enlightening journey, for the Psyche probe!
