Freedom is an idea as it is abstract and can be defined differently by each individual. For some freedom means being released from the confines of a prison cell. For others it may mean not being tied down by schedules or obligations. The concept of freedom is closely linked to having space and the ability to act without hindrance in environments that hold significance.
Years ago, I had the great opportunity to visit Château d'If, in the Frioul archipelago. Constructed in the 16th century, gained notoriety as a terrible prison. Its notability was further amplified by Alexandre Dumas' novel, "The Count of Monte Cristo." As I explored the dim corridors and cells. The harsh conditions endured by inmates evoked a profound sense of empathy and appreciation for the concept of freedom.
The protagonist of the novel, Edmond Dantes, a vice-commander in the merchant navy, spent fourteen years in captivity within the fortress's walls before escaped. Four years of complete isolation pushed him to the brink of madness. However, a fortunate encounter with Abbot Faria, a fellow prisoner, changed the course of his life. Faria, an eccentric character, unintentionally ended up in Dantes' cell while attempting to dig an escape tunnel. Their time together transformed Faria into a mentor, fostering personal growth and evolution. In the darkness of the prison, Faria offered Dantes that no one can never take away to you: knowledge."
This brings us to the heart of the question. We often perceive freedom as a right rained down from heaven to do what we want, but we should realize that true freedom lies within ourselves. Albert Einstein eloquently stated, "A mind that opens to a new idea never returns to a previous dimension." The key lies in embracing knowledge, science, and culture as the pillars of boundless freedom. Through a huge understanding of the world, we have to gain the ability to make conscious choices and overtake the challenges that come our way.
That trip was a powerful reminder that freedom transcends physical barriers. It is a state of mind, driven by knowledge and an open perspective. While external factors may limit our actions, it is crucial to acknowledge our role in constructing our own prisons. By expanding our intellectual horizons, we can break free from self-imposed prison and feel the true essence of freedom. Château d'If serves as a plastic symbol, urging us to know the depths of our potential and unlock the doors to a life of unlimited liberation.
The prison of ignorance is thus the most atrocious for humanity and at the same time also the most unconscious: but choosing knowledge is not an easy way. Study and personal growth are consequences of commitment and effort and almost never a guarantee of success. It is for sure that they allow humans to not degenerate into the vulgarity of brutal instincts.
