Debunking the Myth: Alcohol and Perceived Attractiveness

Alcohol and Perceived Attractiveness
The "beer goggles" phenomenon, a term coined by Americans implying that alcohol consumption enhances the attractiveness of others, has been a topic of intrigue for some time. However, does this phenomenon genuinely exist? Numerous studies have attempted to answer this question, but no definitive conclusions have been reached. Recent research, however, suggests the "beer goggles" effect might be a myth. Instead, it appears that alcohol loosens our inhibitions, making us more likely to engage with those we already find appealing when sober. These findings were published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

In contrast to previous research, the latest study introduced an element of realism by making participants believe they would have an opportunity to interact with the individuals in the photos they were "choosing" from, both sober and post-alcohol consumption. "This study introduced a level of realism that was missing in earlier research," explains Rebecca Monk, a psychology professor who was not involved in the study.

The study involved 18 pairs of male friends, asked to rate the attractiveness of individuals in photos and videos. In one session, they consumed a blend of vodka and blueberry juice, achieving a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent (the legal limit in England); in another, they enjoyed a soft beverage.

The outcomes revealed that the participants did not perceive the individuals in the photographs as more attractive post-alcohol consumption. However, when intoxicated, they were 1.71 times more likely to interact with those they found more appealing compared to when they consumed non-alcoholic beverages. "Alcohol seems to boost what we refer to as liquid courage, or the desire to engage with those we find attractive," explains Monk.

Considering the impact alcohol has on visual and cognitive processing functions, the results might vary if the levels of alcohol intoxication were to increase. Nonetheless, Monk emphasizes the importance of awareness of the potential consequences of alcohol consumption, which may initially seem pleasant but could prove detrimental in the long term.
