An academic research conducted at the University of South Australia and published in the Nutrients journal indicates that consuming walnuts can aid in enhancing mental health, alleviating mental and academic stress. Walnuts are a rich source of polyunsaturated fats, which are healthier than unsaturated fats. They are also naturally packed with essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, melatonin, antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamin E, and folate, crucial for optimal brain function. Previous investigations have demonstrated a positive correlation between walnut consumption and improved mental health. Moreover, incorporating walnuts into your diet can contribute to reducing LDL (bad cholesterol) and overall cholesterol levels.


The experiment, led by Ph.D. student Mautriz Herselman and Associate Professor Larisa Bobrovskaya, provided compelling evidence demonstrating the positive impact of walnut consumption on the mental health of students.


Herselman noted, "Throughout their studies, students encounter academic stress, negatively impacting their mental health. They are particularly susceptible during exam periods."


Walnuts offer a wide range of health benefits, from managing stress and weight to preventing cancer.


The researchers chose university students for their study since they frequently struggle with mental health issues. The study observed two groups in three clinical intervals: during a 13-week semester, during exams, and two weeks post-exams. The experimental design involved dividing 80 students into a treatment group and a control group. The students in the treatment group were given walnuts to consume daily for a 16-week period.



Explaining the results, the researchers said, “We found that those who consumed about half a cup of walnuts every day showed improvements in self-reported mental health indicators.”


Researchers suggested the students to add walnuts to their daily diet especially during exams. They could get a lot of benefit from walnuts.


On the flip side, the control group of students experienced an escalating rate of stress and depression, a trend that only intensified as exams approached. This was not the case for the students who were consuming walnuts daily.


Associate Professor Larisa Bobrovskaya further clarified, "Our research has established that walnut consumption during stressful times can significantly enhance mental health and overall wellness among university students. Besides being a healthy and tasty snack, walnuts are a versatile ingredient in numerous recipes that can help combat the negative effects of academic stress."


University students are particularly prone to mental health issues, which can have a detrimental impact on their academic achievements and long-term physical health.


Herselman pointed out, “The World Health Organization recently reported that a minimum of 75% of mental health disorders affect individuals under the age of 24, making undergraduate students especially susceptible to mental health issues.”



A single ounce of walnuts can fulfill up to 3% of the daily recommended calcium intake, up to 10% of iron, up to 5% of potassium, up to 14% of magnesium, and up to 7% of folate.


The consumption of walnuts can have a protective and positive influence against stress and the adverse effects of academic pressure. Summing up the study, Professor Bobrovskaya explained, "Our findings have demonstrated that incorporating walnuts into one's diet during stressful periods can significantly boost mental health and overall well-being in university students. They are not only a healthy and delectable snack but also a flexible ingredient in various recipes, able to combat some negative effects of academic stress."
