The environmental impact caused by the cruising industry is a concern that should not be taken lightly. According to a study conducted by Transport & Environment a fleet of 100 cruise ships can release much sulfur oxide into the atmosphere as 2 million cars do in a year. This data highlights an overlooked fact. Cruise ships contribute more to pollution than cars.
These ships usually dock in ports like Civitavecchia, which is known as one of Europes polluted ports. The 100 ships that visit this port each year are responsible for emitting significant amounts of harmful sulfur oxide. In fact Italy reportedly has 10 out of the 50 polluted ports, in Europe.
The problem becomes worse due to the fact that many of these vessels operate using dense fuel oil. This type of fuel which is a cheap by product of oil refining is notorious for its levels of pollutants. The usage of fuel leads to significantly increased emissions of sulfur dioxide, a gas known to have negative effects on our health.
However the environmental consequences caused by these ships go beyond air pollution. They also generate noise pollution in the oceans disturbing marine life, especially dolphins and whales. Additionally they contribute to sea pollution through the disposal of waste and accidental fuel spills.
Moreover these ships inadvertently contribute to the spread of animal species disrupting the balance in marine ecosystems. Furthermore they play a role in emitting carbon dioxide. The primary gas responsible for global warming.. It's important to note that their environmental impact extends beyond air pollution as they also generate considerable noise pollution in our oceans causing disturbance among marine creatures, like dolphins and whales.
Additionally the cruise industry is contributing to the pollution of our oceans through the release of waste and fuel spills.
In recognition of its impact on the environment the cruise industry is now exploring energy sources. Carnival Corporation for example has set a target to reduce its carbon intensity by 40% by 2030 and achieve carbon operations by 2050.
It's crucial that we take action now as global citizens. We must be aware of these issues. Promote sustainable practices within the cruising industry. Our goal goes beyond safeguarding our environment; it's, about ensuring an healthy future for generations to come.
