 Asteroid Day, observed annually on June 30, is a global initiative aimed at educating the public about asteroids and their potential impacts on our planet. This significant date was selected in remembrance of the Tunguska event on June 30, 1908, the largest recorded asteroid impact on Earth's history. This remarkable awareness day was conceptualized in 2014 by notable figures such as physicist Stephen Hawking, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, filmmaker Grigory Richters, and Queen's guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May. 

The United Nations officially endorsed Asteroid Day in 2016, recognizing it as an annual global observance. Recognized annually on June 30th, Asteroid Day was initially instituted in 2015 with an objective to enlighten the global audience about the characteristics of asteroids and the potential risks they pose to our planet's safety. The date, June 30, symbolizes the Tunguska event, the largest recorded asteroid impact that occurred on the same day in 1908.

The concept of dedicating a day to asteroids was conceived in 2014, following the Chelyabinsk event, by eminent personalities including physicist Stephen Hawking, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, filmmaker Grigory Richters, and Brian May, an astrophysicist and guitarist for Queen. In 2016, the United Nations endorsed this initiative, proclaiming Asteroid Day as a global commemoration to be celebrated annually.
