Arp 147: A Glimpse into the Evolutionary History of Interacting Galaxies

arp 147
Arp 147, a captivating duo of interacting galaxies, is situated 400 million light-years away from Earth within the Whale constellation. This remarkable pair of galaxies aligns to resemble the number 10, providing astronomers with a unique opportunity to study their evolutionary history.

Originally, the system comprised a spiral galaxy (right) and an elliptical galaxy (left). The cosmic dance began when the elliptical galaxy pierced through the spiral one. During the interaction, the spiral galaxy experienced significant distortion. The ensuing shock waves transformed its appearance, creating a distinctive ring shape. Furthermore, these shock waves ignited intense star formation, as evidenced by the vibrant blue hue of the ring.

In comparison, the elliptical galaxy (left) remained relatively unscathed by the collision. Its original structure is still discernible, though its core is now encircled by a ring. Contrary to the spiral galaxy, this ring doesn't exhibit any active star formation.
