Witness the Enigmatic Black Moon on May 19th – No Ominous Sign, Just a Celestial Treat

3:23 PM |

On the night of May 19th, don't miss the captivating Black Moon, a stunning celestial event that holds no foreboding implications. This phenomenon is termed "Black Moon" because, in a season with four New Moons, this is the third occurrence – a rarity.

While "Black Moon" is not an astronomical term (similar to "Blue Moon" and "Supermoon"), its popularity has grown in recent years through social media, astrologers, and Wiccan religion followers.

The Black Moon's significance can be traced back to ancient myths and legends. In early Hebrew Bible versions, Lilith, which translates to "Black Moon," was believed to be Abraham's first partner. She was rejected and expelled from Eden due to her defiance of divine will.

In contemporary astrology, the Black Moon symbolizes not only significant change but also the darker aspects and subconscious motivations of the human soul.

Since it is not an official astronomical event, the Black Moon does not have a single definition. Instead, it has at least two: it can be the second New Moon in a month or the third New Moon in a season with four occurrences.

The first type of Black Moon is more frequent, happening approximately once every 29 months (the last one took place on April 30, 2022). Due to timezone variations, the month they occur may differ. The second type is rarer, occurring about once every 33 months, and this is the kind we will experience on May 19th (refer to the map for the sky view on May 19th at around 9 p.m. UTC+2).

Similar definitions apply to the Blue Moon, but in that case, it involves a Full Moon (the next one is scheduled for August 31).

So, on the night of May 19th, the sky will be devoid of the moon, presenting an irresistible opportunity to escape light pollution and gaze upon a starry sky (weather permitting).
