Mars' Iron Abundance: A Result of Its Formation
During the solar system's formation, many planets acquired large amounts of iron, the remnants of long-dead stars. While most planets experienced sufficient gravitational collapse to retain iron in their cores, Mars, due to its smaller size and weaker gravity, could not. Although the red planet does have an iron core, significant quantities of the element are also found in its superficial layers.
Oxidation: The Key to Mars' Red Surface
Iron itself has a shiny black appearance, and its reddish hue only emerges when it is exposed to oxygen in sufficient quantities, transforming it into iron oxide. While there is no definitive explanation, scientists concur that Mars' iron gradually rusted due to some form of weathering.
There are three primary hypotheses:
1. Ancient rainstorms on a young, wet Mars rusted the iron by bombarding the soil with oxygen atoms released from water molecules.
2. Oxidation occurred slowly over billions of years as sunlight decomposed carbon dioxide and other molecules in the atmosphere into hydrogen peroxide and ozone.
3. As proposed by Danish researchers in 2009, Martian dust storms incrementally rusted the iron by breaking down quartz crystals in the regolith, leaving their oxygen-rich surfaces exposed.
Wavelengths: The Science Behind the Red
Although the exact reason for Mars' color remains uncertain, the iron oxide on its surface appears red because it absorbs blue and green wavelengths of the light spectrum while reflecting red wavelengths. This distinctive reddish hue, visible even from millions of miles away, inspired its naming after the Roman god of war. The Egyptians referred to it as "Her Desher," meaning "the red one," and ancient Chinese astronomers called it "the star of fire."
