Optimizing Eye Health with Daily Coffee and Tea Consumption

10:20 PM |

Consuming two to three cups of coffee or four cups of tea daily can enhance the health of the macula lutea, the retinal area responsible for central vision. This finding comes from a study conducted by a group of Chinese researchers.

As reported by Medical Xpress, both tea and coffee can increase the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer, thereby reducing the risk of neurodegeneration – the progressive deterioration and demise of neurons. The study, led by Lisa Zhuoting Zhu, utilized retinal nerve fiber layer thickness as an indicator of brain health. Zhu explained, "The thinner the layer, the greater the risk of neurodegeneration." The macula, located at the center of the retina at the back of the eye, provides clear vision. Retinal nerve fibers create a thin layer of nerve cells that convey visual data from the eye to the brain.

Zhu stated, "Our results indicate that if we consume two to three cups of coffee or more than four cups of tea per day, macular thickness increases." The research team arrived at this conclusion by analyzing data gathered from 35,000 volunteers. Participants were divided into four groups based on their daily tea or coffee intake. Using optical coherence tomography (a technique that employs light waves to generate cross-sectional retinal images), specialists examined the eyes of all subjects. The study revealed that individuals who consumed two to three cups of coffee daily experienced a significant increase in macular layer thickness, while those who drank more than four cups of tea daily observed a similar outcome.
