 The history of the bicycle spans over 200 years, with the first bike invented in 1817 by Karl Drais[. Cycling has since become one of the most popular sports worldwide, with the first race taking place in Paris in 1868. The iconic Giro d'Italia started in 1909, becoming one of the three most prestigious stage races in Europe. 


1. Invention of the Bicycle: Karl Drais invented the first version of the bicycle, known as the "draisina," in 1817. It featured steering and two wheels but lacked pedals, requiring riders to propel the bike with their feet.


2. First Cycling Race: The first bicycle race took place in a Paris park on May 31, 1868, with Britain's James Moore emerging as the winner. Italy held its first road race between Florence and Pistoia two years later.


3. Giro d'Italia: The Giro d'Italia was first announced in 1908 and started in Milan on May 13, 1909. The race, including eight stages and 2,447 kilometers, was won by Luigi Ganna.

5. Graziella Folding Bike: In 1964, Italian designer Rinaldo Donzelli created the iconic Graziella folding bike, which became a hit and a symbol of Italian design in the 1960s.


6. First Round-the-World Bicycle Tour: American Fred Birchmore completed the first round-the-world trip on a bicycle in 1935, covering 64,373 km.


7. Most Expensive Bike: The House of Solid Gold jewelry store created the 24K Gold Extreme Mountain Bike, valued at one million dollars.


8. Italian Region with Most Bike Lanes: Emilia-Romagna has the most bike lanes per inhabitant in Italy, with Reggio Emilia leading the list.


9. Bike Speed Record: Denise Mueller Korenek set the bicycle speed record in 2018, reaching a staggering 296 km/h in Utah's deserts by drafting behind a powerful dragster racing car.
