In weeks ChatGPT has emerged as a groundbreaking development in the world of artificial intelligence granting unprecedented power to internet users. Its popularity has skyrocketed, attracting one million users in five days. OpenAI has introduced this AI product for consumers offering limitless possibilities such as writing essays, coding, building apps and even acing professional level tests.



For years chatbots like Siri and Alexa have served as assistants capable of quickly answering specific queries like "Will it rain tomorrow in Bologna?" or "What is 2+2?". However ChatGPT sets itself apart by tackling abstract and open ended questions with remarkable depth. While its capabilities are impressive there are concerns about its impact on societys well being.


Despite the voiced apprehensions about this advancing field there seems to be no intention to halt or slow down its progress. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft expressed his commitment, to integrating ChatGPTs functionalities into Microsofts future products. By commercializing these features AI capabilities will likely become commonplace in our lives.

In the past Microsoft has made an investment of $1 billion in Open AI. Recently they further invested an amount of $10 billion with the launch of ChatGPT 3.


This additional investment is expected to propel OpenAI and its products to heights. However there is a lack of effective governmental regulation in the tech industry. The bureaucratic institutions struggle to keep up with the advancements in AI technology. A prime example of this is the Facebook data scandal, where big tech companies tend to apologize promise improvement and then continue with business as usual. It is crucial that consumer safety takes precedence. These private companies have established monopolies over consumer data without proving their trustworthiness in protecting it. There are concerns that OpenAI might follow this trend by collecting consumer information through ChatGPT and selling it to third parties.


The abuse of power goes beyond data collection and selling; there are potential risks on the consumer side as well. Similar to Googles capabilities ChatGPT provides access to vast amounts of information. However its broader range of functionalities also increases the possibilities for misuse and potential dangers.


To mitigate harm or misuse ChatGPT incorporates protective measures, against harmful inquiries.

When someone asks about building a gun the automated response states, "I cannot provide instructions on how to construct a gun or any other illegal or dangerous devices." However the existing measures in place are insufficient because they rely on the programmers judgment of what is considered harmful. The responsibility of regulation should be entrusted to an organization rather than being solely managed by the company itself.


Contrary to a 2013 study conducted at the University of Oxford which suggested that 47% of jobs in the United States could be replaced by AI within two decades it seems that this prediction was not entirely accurate.


A significant concern regarding this all knowing bot is its tendency to be frequently incorrect. Internet users have noticed that ChatGPT often fails to provide information, which can lead to the dissemination of harmful misinformation. The tech industry already faces challenges with misinformation, such as information on Facebook that influenced the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.


However it's important to note that these bots performance relies heavily on the data they have access to. These platforms draw insights from amounts of text uploaded onto the internet over several decades. Considering what people have actually written during those years there is potential, for output based on this input data.

This encompasses a range of issues including spreading information and displaying biases against minority groups. Googles praised AI team recently introduced Bard, their competitor to ChatGPT. However Bards first outing included a disputed claim related to astronomy.



Interestingly algorithms designed to provide like responses and answer questions sometimes take shortcuts to fulfill their primary objective. They may even "hallucinate". Fabricate answers if necessary. Surprisingly asking the question twice can yield two completely different answers both delivered with equal confidence.


It's important to note that this abundance of misinformation doesn't always involve intent. Well meaning individuals, such as students seeking help with their homework or adults facing tight deadlines can unknowingly contribute to spreading false information.


While the content generated by AI systems hasn't reached the level of quality achieved by the human creators yet their speed, scalability and cost effectiveness provide them with a significant advantage. These AI powered systems are capable of producing content instantaneously and are poised to dominate popular content distribution platforms, like TikTok, Twitter, Google and Facebook – platforms that increasingly shape our media consumption choices. It is likely that the majority of internet content will be generated by AI systems which will then train subsequent generations of generative AI tools.

This risk is undeniably significant—it's an one, akin to the battle social networks face against online hate. When an algorithm is designed with a purpose, such as maximizing attention or generating pleasant content it tends to default to that intention. This fundamental flaw poses a threat to the potential of generative AI as a source of wealth.


If OpenAls teams do not succeed in addressing this issue it could disrupt our information landscape entirely. Currently fact checkers work diligently to identify and address instances of " news." However in the future we may have to assume that everything is potentially tainted until proven otherwise.


So what can be done? Tools like ChatGPT should find their place within the information hierarchy—ideally serving as interfaces for high quality information retrieval systems. This aligns with the collaboration between OpenAI and Microsofts Bing search engine.


One proposed solution is to establish sources of clean and trustworthy information whose origins, processes and editorial practices can be audited. These sources could serve as training data for fact checking tools which will need to become as commonplace, as spell checking software is today.

According to OpenAIs website their mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits everyone. Unlike other tech giants like Google, who keep their AI research under wraps OpenAI shares its knowledge with the public.


This growing emphasis on AI within academia and government demonstrates how new players in the industry are adapting to these concerns. However there are still changes that need to be made before ChatGPT can be considered genuinely beneficial for humanity. To achieve ethical AI we require more robust regulatory policies at both the internal level within AI companies and, on a global scale.
