A GIANT "ALIEN"

Looks like it's from a prehistoric science fiction movie.

Kilimanjaro is an extraordinary incubator for rare species that is hard to find elsewhere. The giant groundsel looks like a cross between a cactus and a pineapple tree that, with its alien appearance, can be found only in very few high altitude environments of East Africa (between 2500 to 4600 meters).

To survive such a hostile environment plants have developed a system of natural "antifreeze" that allows them to accumulate water inside them.

The tallest species may reach 3 metres and sometimes even 6 metres!
