Nikola Tesla: The main inventions and controversies of the "wronged genius"

12:52 AM | ,

If you follow tech news, you've probably heard of Tesla.  The company that develops cars and electric motors honors in its name one of the greatest inventors that ever lived, the electrical engineer Nikola Tesla.

To learn more about this Austro-Hungarian who changed our relationship with electricity, Tilt answered the main questions about Tesla.  Who was he, what were the main inventions, where he lived and his most famous phrases.

 Who was Nikola Tesla?

Nikola Tesla was a Serbian inventor who was born on July 10, 1856 (Austro-Hungarian Empire) in a town called Smiljan, which is in present-day Croatia.  A physicist and engineer, he became famous for his contributions to the design of the alternating current electricity system.  Although his inventions still apply today, Tesla was broke when he died on January 7, 1943.

Where did Nikola Tesla live and die?

Nikola Tesla was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1856 and during his life he passed through several countries in Europe.  He studied Electrical Engineering in Austria (1873), Physics in the Czech Republic (1880), worked in Hungary (1881) and France (1882), until moving to the United States.

He arrived in New York (1884) to work with Thomas Edison.  He resided for many years at the famous Waldorf Astoria hotel when he was at the height of his financial and intellectual life.  He lived for a decade at the New Yorker Hotel, where he died in 1943.

What are Nikola Tesla's main inventions?

In 1882, Tesla discovered the rotating magnetic field - a fundamental principle of physics that allowed the creation of devices that use alternating current.  Working with Thomas Edison in New York, United States, the Austro-Hungarian created tools that made possible the use of alternating current for transmission of electrical energy over long distances.  Today, it is used in high voltage wires across the planet.

Other important Tesla inventions were the electric induction motor used in industries and in household appliances, the remote control, the radio transmission, the ignition system used in cars, the Tesla Coil, among others.  There were more than 40 patent registrations in the United States and 700 worldwide.

What are Nikola Tesla's main legacies?

Tesla contributed to the invention of radio, created the first X-ray image in the Americas, developed the electric induction motor, and perfected fluorescent lamps.

The Austro-Hungarian also created the teleautomaton, a boat controlled by radio waves that acted directly on the battery.  This invention unfolded into three acquaintances of ours: remote control, robotics and drones.

But it was an electrical transformer that had the honor of earning his surname.  The Tesla Coil, now used in museums for educational purposes, was of great importance in 1890 in helping scientists understand electricity.

In 1913, he also developed a device called a Tesla turbine, which, unlike conventional ones, does not have blades.  Until 2006, his invention had no commercial application, but today it is used in research in the area of biomedicine and wind energy.

Why is Nikola Tesla called "the wronged genius"?

As stated earlier, Nikola Tesla's contribution to science is far greater than alternating current.  However, he did not receive credit for many of the inventions he developed.  That's why he is called the "most wronged genius in history."

Were Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison "arch enemies"?

Before falling out, Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison worked together.  However, they began to differ over the use of alternating current (AC) - Edison based his technologies on direct current (DC) and was against "Tesla's killer current".

The dispute between the two became known as The War of Currents, portrayed in a 2017 film. It was at the Chicago World's Fair, in 1893, that Tesla managed to demonstrate the superiority of his system and ended the controversies created by his rival.

What were the controversies in Tesla's life?

In addition to the public dispute with Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla also had to fight to prove he was the inventor of radio.  In 1895, a fire destroyed his laboratory as he was finishing testing a transmission.  In 1896, the Italian Guglielmo Marconi developed a very similar wireless system.

Tesla got his patent in 1900, but in 1901 Marconi managed to make the first transatlantic radio broadcast using some of Tesla's inventions.  In 1904, the agency reversed the patent on radium and gave it to the Italian, who received a Nobel Prize in 1911 for the invention.

Marconi was sued by Tesla and the matter dragged through the courts until 1943, shortly after his death.  It was only then that the US Supreme Court recognized Tesla as the inventor of the radio transmission system.

The laboratory fire would also have harmed the Austro-Hungarian in radiography research.  The discovery is attributed to the German Wilhelm Rötgen who, after winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 for the invention, helped Nikola Tesla create the first X-ray image of the Americas.

What are Nikola Tesla's most famous phrases?

Some phrases said by Nikola Tesla became famous, such as:

"If you want to discover the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration"

"I don't think there is a more intense emotion for an inventor than seeing his creations work. Those emotions make you forget to eat, to sleep, everything."

"Mutual understanding would be greatly facilitated by the use of a universal language (Esperanto)"

Did Nikola Tesla imagine the wireless internet and the cell phone?

While experimenting to develop a transatlantic radio transmitter, Tesla envisioned in 1901 a system that could collect and transmit information to handheld devices.  For him, this technology would be able to transmit images, music and even videos around the world.  He also coined the term "pocket technology," envisioning the invention of smartphones nearly 100 years before they became a reality.

Tesla caused an earthquake in New York?

In the challenge of creating more efficient electricity, Tesla believed he had invented an earthquake machine.  However, he had only "shaked" the buildings on Manhattan Island due to the effects of his high-frequency oscillator, a steam-powered electric generator.

What is Nikola Tesla's connection with Elon Musk's automaker?

Tesla's name was chosen in honor of the scientist Nikola Tesla, as he was a revolutionary in electrical current and power supply.  Tesla was also concerned about the unbridled consumption of the planet's resources and advocated the development of renewable fuels, replacing the use of coal, oil and natural gas.
