FREE ASTRONOMY, the blog that brings you to the stars
The FREE-ITALIA group, expands and consolidates its popular offerings on astronomy by creating a new blog, we are present on Facebook and Twitter with our new brand FREE ASTRONOMY.

Imagine a clear night of being alone or in conpany with someone, who maybe you like, you raise your head and see many bright dots, stop and admire that spectacle, after snatching a kiss. you will ask yourself: But how is the sky made and how does it work?

Astronomy is a discipline that begins with analyzing that immense dome above us also called the sky, firmament or more simply the vault of heaven. Observing it, understanding it and knowing how to examine its characteristics are the first steps we need to take to ensure a solid foundation for our passion.

All this might appear to be an undertaking reserved exclusively for owners of expensive optical instruments. But if this is true for deep-sky objects, it is not so true for beginning to learn about the most common celestial phenomena and bodies. Just think that the astronomers of antiquity succeeded in this endeavor with the help of only one instrument: the eye.

Thanks to our sense, in fact, it is possible to observe the brightest stars and consequently, with the help of paper or digital celestial maps, to identify the different visible constellations depending on latitude, season and time of observation.

We begin the exploration of the sky by learning some rules about orientation. Once the basic references are found, it will be child's play to understand the apparent dynamics of the starry vault, so much so that someone will exclaim (as happened to yours truly), "But how did I not understand this before? It's obvious!"

Sometimes some topics are approached in a detached manner because they are deemed (wrongly) beyond one's intellectual capacity. What we have promised to do in these pages (hopefully with results) is to break down these mental preconceptions-where there are any-by introducing the first astronomical notions in a clear and simplified way.
