Can We Make It Rain? The Science of Cloud Seeding

Join FreeAstroScience for an exclusive stream exploring weather modification technologies

About This Live Session

Have you ever looked at a dry sky and wished you could make it rain? During this live stream, astrophysicist Miracle Chibuzzor Marcel will break down the complex atmospheric science of artificial precipitation into an accessible, engaging conversation.

What is Cloud Seeding?
Dating back to an accidental discovery in a General Electric lab in 1946, cloud seeding is a weather modification technique. Scientists inject microscopic condensation nuclei—such as silver iodide, potassium iodide, or dry ice—into supercooled clouds. Water vapor clings to these particles, forming droplets or ice crystals that grow heavy enough to fall to Earth as rain.

As over 2 billion people currently live in water-stressed regions, countries like the United Arab Emirates, China, India, and the United States are actively utilizing this technology to combat droughts and manage weather events. Watch the stream above to join the community discussion, ask questions live, and discover how humanity is attempting to command the clouds.
