Stop Violence Against Women: FREEAstroScience supports culture of respect

As we delve into the intricate realms of  science  and culture, we often overlook the profound impact they can have on shaping our societal norms, including the pressing issue of violence against women. Here at FREEAstroScience, we believe in harnessing the power of science for the betterment of humanity, and today, we address the issue of gender-based violence from a unique perspective.

The message we want send

The very serious phenomenon of violence against women has experienced a frightening increase, especially in the family environment, and only a very low percentage of cases of crimes against women are reported, due to fear, omerta and lack of adequate defense. Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we want to send the message that for 365 days we will say NO to violence against women.

Violence against women can take many forms: physical, sexual, psychological, and economic, all characterized by men's domination and control over women.

Violence against women is considered by both the UN and the Council of Europe as a violation of human rights and a form of gender-based discrimination. It is a cross-cutting violence that has no geographical, social or economic boundaries, precisely because it is a structural phenomenon based on gender inequality and gender stereotypes.

Violence and gender equality are, therefore, closely related issues.

The preamble of the Istanbul Convention recognizes the structural nature of such violence, which is both a cause and a consequence of inequality in power relations between women and men and which limits the full emancipation of women.

The Impact of Violence

Violence does not only cause physical harm; it leaves deep psychological scars that can last a lifetime. Neurological studies shed light on how traumatic experiences, like violence, can impact brain functions, leading to long-term effects such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Understanding these biological implications is crucial in devising effective interventions.

A Call to Action

Science provides us the tools and understanding to address these issues effectively. But it's up to us, as a society, to take the necessary steps. We invite our readers to join us in our commitment to using science for social good and say no more to violence against women.

The fight against violence towards women is not just a societal or moral duty; it's a scientific one. As we uncover the mysteries of the universe, we must also strive to unravel and address the complexities within our societies. Change is possible, and it starts with us.

Remember, your voice matters. Let's use science to amplify it.
