THE BLACK BOX OF THE EARTH

The tragic events in Ukraine, with the spectre of nuclear war, remind us once again of the fragile equilibrium of our planet.

They had already been at work for a long time and now researchers at the University of Tasmania, in collaboration with some private companies, are even more convinced that they must build the Earth’s black box, a complex device, destined to last, that will deliver to future generations data and information about what we have (or haven’t) done to save the planet. It’s a monolith built to record the last stages of our civilization: the people of the future will learn from our mistakes.

The Earth’s black box will be powered by solar and thermal energy. The inter-generational container is designed to be indestructible. The black box was also installed in Tasmania for the relative geopolitical tranquillity of the area and was designed to withstand any kind of natural disaster.

The goal is to create an archive of data, such as the temperatures on the surface of the emerged lands and seas, the amount of greenhouse gases present in the Earth’s atmosphere, the degree of acidification of the oceans. Not only environmental data: the reconnaissance really intends to be the chronicle of the steps towards (or against) a sustainable development of our species on the Planet. For example, among other things, the black box will also record global demographic trends, energy consumption and institutional decisions at the national and international levels.

Probably the black box is more an incentive to push politics towards more effective actions and collecting data will not save the world, but the initiative in Tasmania draws attention to the urgency of the climate crisis and geopolitics.
